Restructuring Options for John Burroughs Middle School:

Small Learning Community A Small Learning Community (SLC), also referred to as a School-Within-A-School, is a form of school structure that is increasingly common in secondary schools to subdivide large school populations into smaller, autonomous groups of students and teachers.
The primary purpose of restructuring secondary schools into SLCs is to create a more personalized learning environment to better meet the needs of students. Each community will often share the same teachers and student members from grade to grade.

Professional Learning Community A professional learning community (PLC) is an extended learning opportunity to foster collaborative learning among colleagues within a particular work environment or field. It is often used in schools as a way to organize teachers into working groups.
PLCs have many variations. In one definition PLCs "extend... classroom practice into the community; bringing community personnel into the school to enhance the curriculum and learning tasks for students; or engaging students, teachers, and administrators simultaneously in learning."[1] Richard Dufour, a recognized national expert in PLCs, finds that "To create a professional learning community, focus on learning rather than on teaching, work collaboratively, and hold yourself accountable for results."[2] The Ontario Ministry of Education defines a PLC as "a shared vision or running a school in which everyone can make a contribution, and staff are encouraged to collectively undertake activities and reflection in order to constantly improve their students’ performance."[3]
The idea behind a PLC was to integrate two concepts that in the past, have been quite distinctive from each other; professional and community. Louis states that, professionalism is, "based on specialized knowledge and a focus on serving client needs"; whereas community is, "based on caring, support, and mutual responsibility within a group."

Charter Schools: Charter schools are public schools, but they are unique in that they have been freed from many (but not all) of the laws and regulations that govern traditional public schools as a way to increase student achievement.
In California, charter schools are given permission to operate by a school district, a county office of education, or the state department of education. They generally operate on five-year terms. If at the end of a five year term a charter school is being successful, it can apply for another five year term and so on. If it has not been successful, the authorizing district or department of education can choose not to grant another term, and the school will have to close. This system creates a powerful incentive for charter schools to get better and better over time if they plan to stay open!

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) views charter schools as integral to the District's offerings and an opportunity to teach both students and educators. Currently, there are 183 charter schools under the jurisdiction of the LAUSD, serving approximately 78,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
Types of Charters
There are two types of charter schools in the district: Conversion and Start-up
•	A conversion charter is an existing district school that later becomes a charter
•	A start-up is a charter school that is created "from scratch" by any member of the public - educators, parents, foundations and others.
These charters can be fully independent, or district-affiliated which have closer ties to the district. Both must have their board approved charter proposal and both are held to a high level of accountability.
