Important Policy RemindersSEXUAL HARASSMENT Sexual harassment, of or by employees or students, is a form of sex discrimination in that it constitutes differential treatment on the basis of sex. For that reason, it is a violation of state and federal laws and a violation of District policy. The District considers sexual harassment to be a major offense that can result in disciplinary action to the offending employee or the suspension or expulsion of the offending student in Grades 4 – 12. Any student or employee of the District who believes that she or he has been a victim of sexual harassment shall bring the complaint to the attention of the proper authority (whether in an office or a school) so that appropriate action may be taken to resolve the complaint. Complaints will be promptly investigated in a way that respects the privacy of the parties concerned. The District prohibits retaliatory behavior against anyone who files a sexual harassment complaint or any participant in the complaint investigation process. Any such complainant is further advised that civil law remedies may also be available to them. NONDISCRIMINATION STATEMENT The District prohibits discrimination and harassment based on an individual’s actual or perceived sex, sexual orientation, gender (including gender identity, marital status, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical condition), ethnic group identification, race, ancestry, national origin, religion, color, mental or physical disability, age, or on the basis of a person’s association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics. Harassment based on any of the above-protected categories is a form of unlawful discrimination and will not be tolerated by the District. Harassment is intimidation or abusive behavior toward a student or employee that creates a hostile environment and can result in disciplinary action against the offending student or employee. Harassing conduct may take many forms, including but not limited to, verbal remarks and name-calling, graphic and written statements, or conduct that is threatening or humiliating. DISMISSAL/AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Tutoring, Library, Carney and Youth Services are available after school. Students must go home if they are not participating in any of these services. Students are not allowed to gather in front of the school after 3:30 pm. Any students remaining after 3:30 pm will be escorted to the PE field where they will be supervised by an adult. There is no authorized drop off or pickup in any of the surrounding neighborhood blocks. Please respect our neighbors and pick up or drop off your child on campus only. RANDOM SEARCHES All persons who enter the John Burroughs Campus are subject to search by a metal detector. Random searches will be conducted daily. If you would like to anonymously report a weapon on campus, call 1-866-SPEAK-UP. Hall Passes All students must wear a yellow safety vest when sent out of class.
