Dear Parents and Community Partners:

John Burroughs Middle School is committed to your child’s safety and will begin a new program called Safety Valet to relieve traffic congestion and increase the safety of your child when he/she is dropped off at school. The program will take place thirty to forty-five minutes prior to the first school bell in the morning. We are working in partnership with the City of Los Angeles Commission for Children, Youth and Their Families and the Los Angeles Police Department to support this program.

Please share with all designated drivers for your child that the drop off point will be located in front of the school in an area with orange cones outlining the curb side “Safety Valet Zone”. The program will be fast, safe and will be operated by screened parent volunteers in yellow vests with “Kid Watch L.A.” on them. They will be waiting to assist your child with exiting the vehicle.

HELP OUR VOLUNTEERS BY FOLLOWING THESE SIMPLE STEPS PRIOR TO ENTERING THE CONED “SAFETY VALET ZONE.”

Have your child and his/her backpack ready to exit on the curb/passenger side ONLY.

Come to a complete stop next to the curb in front of the “Safety Valet Zone.”

Allow volunteers to open and close your car door(s).

Arrive early to avoid traffic congestion.

Do NOT park and have your child cross the street outside of a crosswalk.

Respect the Safety Valet Program rules and its volunteers.

AVOID EXPENSIVE CITATIONS by abiding by all traffic laws.

The Safety Valet Program will start on 12/08/2008 at approximately 7:20 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. There will be No/Parking in the Safety Valet Zone during this time.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation. The program will reduce traffic congestion and ensure child safety. The Los Angeles Police Department will be present to support and monitor the program and cite drivers who are in violation of traffic laws. For further information regarding violations please refer to the yellow traffic safety notice attached.
