Traffic Safety Awareness Program for Teens

There are two parts to the TRAFFIC SMARTS program.

Part 1: Collision Course

The Collision Course is an interactive exercise allowing students to examine a collision site simulating a car/pedestrian crash. The crash site is replicated in a miniature city with an actual crashed car set up on school property. A discussion will take place regarding the causes of crashes and what countermeasures can be taken to prevent traffic-related deaths and injuries. The crashed car is parked on a flat paved surface with props set up to simulated street corner. The crashed is disabled and has no motor. The set up area is 50 feet x 75 feet. The area is marked off with cones and is supervised by Program Staff while students are present.

Part 2: Rock Climbing Wall

Students have the opportunity to climb a 20 ft. rock wall wearing a safety harness and rock climbing helmets. A simple, safe harness supports climbers throughout the journey to the top. The AutoBelay systems adjust to each rock-climber's weight and provide a slow, smooth decent. Each auto-belay has two pressurized hydraulic rams specifically designed for human lift. There is always a backup ram for safety, ensuring twice the coverage at all times. A 180 degree cushioned floor mat surrounds the wall for a soft landing. All climbing is done under the supervision of professionally trained rock climbing instructors.  The program is designed to demonstrate that a fall from the 20 foot rock wall would have the same impact on their bodies as being struck by a vehicle traveling 20 miles per hour. The experience makes the point that car crashes can kill. The mobile rock wall needs a flat paved surface that is 40 feet x 40.
